Full course description

General Program Information

This course is for middle and high school general music teachers. The course teaches every component of writing a song, including effective lyric-writing using emotionally neutral school-appropriate topics, simple, sensible-sounding melodies and chords. Even if teachers have never written a song, they will observe an original song being written, and the process narrated in real time. The process is broken down for the use of teaching it to students of all experience levels, including non-musicians in a general or music appreciation class. Methods for student assessment are also given.

Objectives

  • Educators will learn to teach song structure for lyrics and music.
  • Educators will learn how to write lyrics in a seamless way, and teach it to students.
  • The teachers will learn simple ways to write a sensible-sounding melody.
  • The teachers will be able to teach their students how simple it is to write a melody and add chords, even if they don't have a lot of musical experience.
