General Program Information

Through participation in this asynchronous webinar, you will learn about the four short vowel spelling patterns (FLSZ doubling; -ck; -tch; -dge) and three suffixing conventions (y to i; 1+1+1 doubling; e-dropping) typically taught in the early elementary grades. You’ll also learn about and have the opportunity to practice various engaging and effective strategies for teaching and practicing these spelling patterns with students. Stern Center Structured Literacy Coach Elizabeth Keenan will also address the “why” of English spelling conventions and the basic principles of direct and explicit spelling instruction that maximize learning opportunities for elementary students.

Objectives

Participants will learn about the four short vowel spelling patterns (FLSZ doubling; -ck; -tch; -dge). Participants will learn about the three suffixing conventions (y to i; 1+1+1 doubling; e-dropping). Participants will learn about engaging and effective strategies for teaching these spelling patterns with students.
